Plastemart.com reported that Brazil Braskem will build the first green polyethylene plant in the world, with investment amount of R$500 million. The plant will be built in the Southern Petrochemical Complex in Rio Grande do Sul state. It will produce ethylene and polyethylene from sugarcane ethanol.
Its construction phase will be started in early 2009 and its start up will be in 2011.
According to press release issued by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of America on December 9, 2008, EPA has fined a key and lock manufacturer in Hudson, Massachusetts, by $70,000 in regard with violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, or RCRA, relating to the characterization, handling, labeling and storage of hazardous waste.
EPA found some violation points associated with hazardous waste management in that company. Here are the EPA’s findings:
1. The company was failed to make adequate determinations about the nature and characteristics of its hazardous wastes.
2. The company did not provide proper protection facility in order to protect surrounding environment, if hazardous waste leakage occurs.
3. Incompatible wastes were stored near one another without any means of separation to prevent the possibility of dangerous chemical reactions.
4. The containers were not properly labeled as hazardous waste.
However, can we imagine how to improve these findings?
Actually, the answers can be extracted from hazardous chemical labels and MSDS. Or if these documents do not give enough information, we can directly contact chemical manufacturer and supplier.
In addition, almost every country has its own regulation related to hazardous waste management, which can be utilized as a reference too.
